Description

THE CABINET OF FREEDOM

THE HISTORY OF THE RISE, PROGRESS, AND ACCOMPLISHMENT OF THE ABOLITION
OF
THE AFRICAN SLAVE-TRADE
BY THE BRITISH PARLIAMENT

By Thomas Clarkson, M.A.

In Three Volumes, Vol. II

New York: John S. Taylor, 1836.

This is Volume 2 only. About 4 3/4 x 7 3/4 inches. The book has strong cover wear with slitting along outer spine edge, wear along edges, rounded corners and some marks. After first blank page there is some separation starting along spine edge where cover is pulling away. And title page plus second title page are loose, and some paper loss at the edge of these pages. There is a pencil note at top of first title page that states “lacks plate” but not sure to what that’s referring. Contents page offers: iron instruments used in the traffic, manner of procuring and paying seamen at Liverpool in the slave trade, dangerous situation of the author, author travels in search of fresh evidence, opponents refuse to argue, cowper’s negro’s complaint, etc… etc… I guess it’s just a reading copy, but the rarity of it and content make it interesting. It seems complete. If you collect books for their binding, then this one isn’t for you. But if you look for knowledge and ephemeral content, then don’t pass bidding on this one.
