THE BOOK OF INDIANS
BY Holling C. Holling
ILLUSTRATED BY H. C. & Lucille Holling
1935 THE PLATT & MUNK CO. NEW YORK
Hardcover, 125 pages
A vintage children's pictorial book on Native American Indians by American author, illustrator, and Caldecott Honor winner Holling Clancy Holling (1900 - 1973), also illustrated in part by his wife Lucille. Holling had a deep interest in nature and American Indians. Prior to the book, the Hollings lived with Indian they describe and enjoyed first-hand experience of paddling in bark canoes, fishing the the Pacific and slept in wickiups and teepees, and experienced the pueblos of the deserts. The Book of Indians gives an overview of the Native American people of various US regions - history, culture, art, etc. - and also recounts many tales and legends. It contains much detail about arts and crafts (e.g. weaving, dyestuffs, teepee and other dwelling construction, animals in the environment, symbols, etc.).
The book contains SIX FULL-PAGE COLOR PLATES by Holling C. Holling in his vivid style, plus a wonderful variety of illustrations in reddish-brown on nearly every page which I presume are by Lucille Holling. Also a MAP on the endpapers showing the Places Indians in this Book Lived. Even though this book is an ex-library book, it is still in pretty good shape, not really abused, just some reading wear. The binding appears to have been reinforced by reddish-brown archival tape, nearly identical to the color of the title and illustration on the cover. OUT OF PRINT.
