He started in Galle in Ceylon and through the Madras Presidency, Bengal Presidency, North West provinces & Oudh, the Punjab, Rajputana and Central India, and the Bombay Presidency.
The book is very descriptive and entertaining; it is rich in detail and draws an accurate picture of the people and their manners, religion and ritual, anecdotes, instances etc.
