THE Lady's Friend
A MONTHLY MAGAZINE OF LITERATURE AND FASHION
EDITED BY MRS. HENRY PETERSON
DECEMBER 1868
PUBLISHED BY DEACON & PETERSON PHILADELPHIA
72+ PAGES PLUS ENGRAVED PLATES
Similar to Godey's Lady's Book, and Peterson's
Magazine, The Lady's Friend was another 19th century publication
that catered mainly to women's' fashion. In fact, the content is so similar that
it blurs the line between them both. There is a steel-engraved story
plate; foldout hand-colored fashion and embroidery engravings
; numerous black & white woodcut engravings of the latest
Victiorian fashions; sheet music for a song; stories by Louise Chandler
Moulton, Harriet Prescott Spofford and Sophie May, poetry and more. Of course,
the stories, songs, poetry, etc. is ephemeral to the fashion engravings which is
the real reason why people want this kind of vintage magazine. This issue of
The Lady's Friend certainly hold its own with Godey's or
Peterson's in that respect.
The Lady's Friend first appeared in 1863 and only lasted
until about 1870. Seems to be much more scarce than Godey's or
Peterson's. I have heard that The Lady's Friend, (unlike the
other two) was written almost entirely by men, but I don't know how much truth
there is to that. The women writers in this issue were certainly real women.
This issue is complete and intact with both covers and in pretty
good condition. It has typical cover wear and tear; spine covering mostly gone,
name written at the top of the front cover but the interior is fine, which is
the most important part. 6 1/2" x 10"
