Description

THE INDIANAPOLIS DAILY JOURNAL

NEWSPAPER

WEDNESDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 1
1862

There is plenty of interesting news of the CIVIL WAR as carried by this Indianapolis, Indiana newspaper from 148 years ago. The lead article is GENERAL McCLELLAN'S OFFICIAL REPORT OF THE BATTLE OF ANTIETAM. It was the first major battle in the Civil War to take place on Northern soil and was also the the bloodiest single-day battle in American history, with about 23,000 casualties. It is probably one of the most talked-about battles of the Civil War to this day when Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan and his Union Army of the Potomac confronted Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia at Sharpsburg, Maryland. While Antietam was considered a draw from a military point of view, President Abraham Lincoln and the Union claimed victory, and was the impetus Lincoln needed for his Emancipation Proclamation speech.

There is much more on the Civil War and other items of note in this newspaper. Here are some of them:

  • NEWS FROM FORTRESS MONROE
  • BATTLE OF IUKA REPORTS
  • NEW OF THE 7th REGIMENT AND OTHER INDIANA TROOPS
  • MAJOR GENERAL FRANZ SIGEL ASKS PRESIDENT LINCOLN TO REMOVE HIM FROM COMMAND
  • GENERAL BUELL REMOVED AND REPLACED BY GENERAL THOMPSON
  • LATE NEWS OF THE REBELS IN KENTUCKY
  • LARGE ILLUSTRATED AD FOR ROBINSON & LAKE'S GREAT COMBINED MENAGERIE AND CIRCUS
  • ILLUSTRATED POCKET WATCH AD
  • ILLUSTRATED AD SHOWING THE AETNA INSURANCE BUILDING IN INDIANAPOLIS
  • ILLUSTRATED AD FOR WARM AIR FURNACES
  • ILLUSTRATED AD FOR PIANO FORTES

There is much more in this antique newspaper, but you'll just have to buy it to see it. You can find other old newspapers with McClellan's Antietam Report in them (usually at a premium), but I doubt you will find another with a great illustrated Circus ad (nearly a whole column) like this. Newspaper is approximately 17 1/2" x 23 1/2" and four pages with a little staining at the top, but otherwise in Very Good + condition.
