Partially Bound in Leather 1200 pages
Well this is a real find, a full year bound volume of Ballou's Magazine! Unless you are a real aficionado of illustrated 19th century magazine, you probably never even heard of Ballou's. The magazine was published by Maturin Murray Ballou (1820 – 1895), who co-founded Gleason's Pictorial; was the first editor of the Boston Daily Globe; and wrote numerous travel books and works of popular fiction. Ballou's Dollar Monthly ("the cheapest magazine in the world") evolved out of Ballou's Pictorial Drawing-Room Companion when Ballou bought out Gleason in 1854 and changed thre name of Gleason's Pictorial. While those had a newspaper-like format, Ballou's Dollar Monthly Magazine was more like Harper's New Monthly, with many similarities, yet many differences too. Ballou's Magazine ran from approximately 1855 to 1893.
As you can well imagine, there is an overwhelming amount of content in this volume, and time and space (and sample photos) to only describe some of the highlights. Remember, you will be much, much more than what is described below.

Stories abound in this volume, and I just mentioned a few above with the more sensational titles. Also plenty of (short) poetry too. Most of the writers I never heard of, but discovering new (old) writers can be a rewarding experience. Much like Harper's Magazine there are a couple of pages of cartoon (panel strips) every month. There are no fashion engravings though. There are monthly columns titled The Florist; The Housewife; Curious Matters; Editor's Table, and Record of the Times. Unlike Harper's there is not much mention of the Civil War. In fact, if you only read Ballou's, you might not have even known there was a Civil War at the time!
Compared to Harper's New Monthly, bound volumes of Ballou's Dollar Monthly Magazine are very scarce, especially full-year (bound volumes are usually only 1/2 year). With all the pictorial content, this is a very worth volume.
