The American Review was an intellectual magazine begun late 1844/early 1845 timed to promote Whig candidate Henry Clay in the presidential election against James K. Polk, who was supported by the Democratic Review. It is noted for publishing some works by Edgar Allan Poe (but not in this issue), and Poe almost became the magazine's Assistant Editor. Poe said the magazine was the best of its kind in the United States.

The American Review ceased publication in 1849, probably because it had little if any illustration and appealed only to a small segment of the population. Consequently, back issues are scarce. It is not unusual to see a single issue going for between $25 - $50. Magazine is 6 " x 9 1/4", front cover attached with chipping on the bottom, back cover detached, and only 1/3 of the spine remains, but otherwise complete and in pretty good condition.
